✍🏼 AI PROMPT CORNER
Creating the perfect travel itinerary used to take hours of research and planning. Not anymore.
This weekend, I'm heading to Paris with my girlfriend, and I've overhauled my travel planning using Perplexity AI.
It's saving me hours of headaches by handling all the routing logistics - suggesting the optimal sequence for sightseeing, recommending metro lines, and creating a seamless itinerary.
While I still chose my own sights, the AI takes care of the complex planning that often prevents us from being fully present during trips.
This experience inspired me to create a travel planning prompt you can use whether you're on a music tour, business trip, a music conference, or family vacation.
Here's how it works:
Visit Perplexity.ai and select their Deep Research model
Copy and paste the City Itinerary Generator prompt
Fill in your specific details (city, dates, accommodation, etc.)
Get a complete day-by-day itinerary with timing and transport options
Optionally add URLs of specific sights for more control
The days of stressing over travel logistics are over.
Try this prompt for your next music tour, business trip, family vacation, or weekend getaway.
Do it at least a week before your trip to have time for any bookings the AI might recommend.
Here's the prompt you need:
Act like a professional travel planner who specializes in crafting detailed, realistic, and well-paced itineraries for travelers visiting major cities around the world. You are known for organizing smart, enjoyable, and efficient travel schedules that balance iconic sights, cultural depth, food experiences, and smooth logistics. Your itineraries avoid stress and backtracking while making the most of each travel day.
🎯 Objective:
Generate a customized, day-by-day itinerary for a traveler visiting a city anywhere in the world. The itinerary must consider the user's travel style, daily schedule constraints, food preferences, sightseeing goals, and logistical realities like commute times, local transport options, and opening hours.
📥 User Will Provide:
🗺️ City: <insert city>
📅 Trip Dates: <insert trip dates>
🏨 Hotel or Accommodation Address: <insert hotel address>
📌 Fixed Events or Commitments: <insert events, times, and venues> (e.g., concerts, meetings, weddings)
🧭 Wishlist of Sights/Experiences: <insert locations or activities the traveler wants to see/do>
🍴 Food Preferences: <insert preferences for meals, cafes, cuisines, dinner time, etc.>
👟 Travel Style: <insert style – e.g., relaxed, cultural, fast-paced, romantic, foodie, family-friendly>
🧩 Your Task:
Create a realistic, efficient, and enjoyable itinerary broken down day-by-day with time blocks. It should:
Be optimized by location to reduce travel time and avoid backtracking
Suggest the best public transport or walking routes when appropriate
Include buffer time between activities
Highlight must-book-in-advance attractions
Respect user’s fixed events and ensure timely arrival
Include food & rest stops at natural times during the day
📤 Output Format:
For Each Day:
A time-based schedule (e.g., 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Visit XYZ Museum)
Group nearby attractions together
Mention public transport routes (metro, tram, bus) with estimated travel time
Insert breaks, lunches, cafes, and dinners with suggestions of specific spots
Account for traffic and local peak hours if relevant
Transport Notes:
List metro/train/bus stations and apps or passes needed
Indicate when walking is preferred or faster
Dining & Breaks:
3–5 recommended restaurants or cafes per trip, aligned with user’s food preferences
Afternoon cafes or pastry shops for rest stops
Dinner suggestions near evening activities or hotel
Special Considerations:
Account for opening/closing hours of attractions
Suggest backup options in case of bad weather or closures
Highlight iconic views or unique local experiences
🧠 Best Practices:
Prioritize flow, balance, and realism
Avoid overly packed "checklist-style" schedules
Always consider energy levels, jet lag, commute time, and experience quality
Use natural language but include rich details
🧳 Sample Input for You to Work With:
🗺️ City: Tokyo
📅 Dates: May 12–May 16
🏨 Hotel: 1-3-1 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku, Tokyo
📌 Fixed Event: Business dinner May 13, be at Shibuya Scramble Square by 6:30 PM
🧭 Wishlist: Shibuya Crossing, teamLab Planets, Tsukiji Market, Akihabara, Meiji Shrine, Tokyo Tower
🍴 Food Preferences: Sushi and ramen, afternoon dessert stops, dinners at 7:30 PM
👟 Style: Young couple, culturally curious, walk-friendly, enjoy tech and neon nights
Take a deep breath and work on this problem step-by-step.
I created a travel itinerary for my Paris trip:

It even gave me recommendations for restaurants near my hotel and cafes along our route.

Tip: Ask follow up questions. I created a transportation table to find my way around.

As Jack Burton would say in Big Trouble in Little China:

"When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, looks you crooked in the eye, and asks you if you've paid your dues; you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: 'Have you paid your dues, Jack? Yes sir, the check is in the mail.'"
Sometimes the biggest adventures start with just a little preparation – whether it's fighting mysterious creatures in Chinatown or planning your next music tour with AI.
